Militant 10 day strike of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers in Maharashtra

Maharashtra saw a total indefinite strike for the first time in the history which started on 18th October 2010. Its preparations started in May itself when Maharashtra Rajya Anganwadi Karmachari Kriti Samiti was formed by the prominent 5 unions working among Anganwadi Workers and Helpers in the state. The Kriti samiti decided to participate in the All India Strike of 9th July 2010 announced by the AIFAWH. A Strike notice was served to the Minister for Women and Child Development and the charter of Demands was also presented along with it. Just before the 1 day strike the Kriti samiti was called for the talks by the Women and Child Development Minister Shri Subhash Zanak on 6th October. The talks were concentrated mainly on 5 demands of Pension, Minimum Wage, Deepavali festival allowance, handing over Urban projects to Municipal Corporations, privatisation and centralization of supplementary nutrition in the form of Take Home Ration, cash allowance for uniform, withdrawal of the orders banning Anganwadi Workers and Helpers from standing for the election and changing the criteria for the promotion of helpers in rural projects from 8th pass to 10th pass. The Minister promised to distribute Sarees before 15th August and pass the improved G O of Pension and raise festival allowance and Honorarium and announce on 2nd October.
